Classification

Classification

Soil classification is a wide-ranging practice, with different tests and methods for determining several important characteristics of a soil sample. In the construction world, the classification of material testing is vital for ensuring the safety of workers in a trench. To keep their employees safe, underground utility companies perform classification tests to make sure the trench won’t cave in due to the soil conditions.

Not only is this a good practice, but it’s also required by OSHA for all trenches that reach down five feet or deeper. At Forney, we have everything you need to perform soil classification tests accurately and efficiently. If you need to test the classification of an asphalt specimen, you will want to take a look at our vacuum degassing ovens, which we offer in 240V and 120V models.

To perform sand equivalent tests on a soil sample to determine the ratio of sand-to-clay, check out our sand equivalent shakers. Our top-of-the-line model is our motorized sand equivalent shaker, with a synchronous gear drive that eliminates the errors that can occur with hand shaking. This device has a direct drive, so you’ll never have to replace a belt or perform complicated maintenance tasks between tests. Of course, if you prefer a manually operated option, we have those too!

For simpler classification tests, we offer the plastic limit test set. This test kit helps you determine the moisture content of a soil sample, and it includes a sample can with a lid, a graduated cylinder, a glass plate, a mixing dish, and a spatula. The classification of material testing requires many different tools and accessories, all of which you can find with Forney!
