FAQS ABOUT COMPRESSION TESTING MACHINES

A compression testing machine is a device that measures the compressive strength of a material, typically concrete, to assess structural durability. Most commonly, a compression machine tests concrete cylinders according to ASTM C39.

A compression testing machine determines a material’s behavior under applied crushing loads. They are also capable of testing for Modulus of Elasticity/Poisson’s Ratio, flexural Modulus of Rupture, Proppant Crush Resistance, and Tensile Splitting tests.

By applying compressive pressure to the test specimen, compression testing machines determine a material’s behavior under crushing loads. First, the specimen is placed on the lower platen and aligned with the upper platen. Then, a small preload is applied to ensure full contact between the platens and specimen ends. For the compression test, load is applied continuously at a consistent rate until failure. Automatic machines control the preload and load automatically, while manual machines require a technician to calculate the preload and make any metering adjustments during the test.

All compression testing machines have a load frame (standard or high stiffness), loading platen (upper and lower), control system (manual or automatic), user interface (pressure gauge or digital interface), load measurement device (load cell or pressure transducer), and safety features (high-pressure safety relief valves, piston over-extension limit switch system and fragment guards).

Other accessories can be added to the compression testing machine depending on the test requirements, like extensometer and compressometer displacement transducers or strain gauges to measure MOE and Poisson’s radio, flexural testing accessories, and other fixtures and accessories for different material geometries.

All compression testing machines from Forney exceed ACI frame rigidity requirements. However, we offer two frame types: standard (F series) and high stiffness (FHS series). High stiffness machine frames are designed specifically for high volume and high strength concrete testing, providing three to four times more rigidity than conventional frames and fully enclosed test chambers for maximum debris and dust control. Standard frames have a load capacity up to 650,000lb, while high stiffness frames have a load capacity up to 1,000,000lb.

Forney compression testing machines are fabricated from solid steel into a one-piece welded unit that exceeds ACI frame rigidity requirements, and the hydraulic cylinder assembly is mounted to the bottom crosshead of the load frame. All Forney machines are manufactured in the USA.
